Daredevil Season 3 Trailer Header

First, it was Iron Fist. Then it was Luke Cage. Now, in a completely unsurprising move, Netflix has cancelled Daredevil. It was one of the streaming service’s flagship shows and the first to be released as a part of the Marvel and Netflix deal that was signed back in 2013. But the move comes after Disney ended their relationship with Netflix and announced they would be launching their own streaming service, Disney+. More on the report here below.

The news was confirmed by Deadline. Recently, season three of Daredevil was released online, which followed the cancellations of the aforementioned Iron Fist and Luke Cage. However, high praise from the critics gave fans hope that Marvel’s Netflix shows would live on. So this Daredevil news likely means that Jessica Jones and The Punisher will come to an end after their new seasons are released, whenever that will be.

Here’s Netflix’s statement about the cancellation:

“Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note”¦.We’re thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years.”

But despite the disappointing news, Netflix was optimistic Daredevil would live on:

“While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”

So while Daredevil‘s story on Netflix has come to an end, the show will still be available to watch on Netflix. At least for the very foreseeable future. Additionally, Netflix hints at the possibility that we’ll see more of Daredevil. There’s no reason to believe that it won’t. Not when the service is already developing a series for Loki, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon and Winter Soldier. But it’s not clear if Disney will revive the three cancelled Marvel series or reboot them or drop them all together.

Daredevil was a part of four Marvel shows that would be streamed exclusively on Netflix. Announced back in 2013, Daredevil was the flagship series of the Marvel and Netflix deal. It would represent the dark and grittier side of the MCU. But like all of the seasons on the Marvel Netflix shows, they ran a lot longer than they originally planned.

Still, actor Charlie Cox brought the Daredevil character to life better than his predecessor Ben Affleck (who played him on the big screen). That may be a bit unfair to say considering that there are two iterations of Daredevils on either screen. But the darker and grittier take was the best way to present the character. And it certainly paid off, as we got three seasons of Daredevil plus The Defenders miniseries.

It will be interesting to see what happens to all of these shows and if Netflix will be given a chance to give all of these characters a proper send off.
