Chris Pratt Says James Gunn’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ Script Will Be Used

Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in a state of limbo right now. The film, which was set to begin production this month for a 2021 release, has been put on an indefinite hold after Disney fired James Gunn for tasteless jokes he posted on Twitter over a decade ago. Even though the director has repeatedly apologized for these tweets, the studio felt that they could not be associated with anyone who made awful jokes and terminated their relationship despite him giving the studio two successful films and the keys to developing a comic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While Gunn is no longer working on the film, there are talks that his script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could still be used. Sean Gunn, his brother, stated that it would be. And now Star Lord himself, Chris Pratt, is saying that it will be used, and that the script is “off the chain.” More on the report below.

Speaking to MTV News to promote The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Pratt was asked if they would be able to work off of Gunn’s script. The actor confirmed that they would be adding that the script is “off the chain,” and that “it’s so good.”

When asked what it would be like to work without James completing the trilogy, Pratt said that he was “loyal to James” and that he “loves him so much.” He added:

We’re going to deliver the movie. We’re going to give fans what they deserve. And I think it’s in the nature of Guardians of the Galaxy to come together to get the job done.

It would be very disappointing if Guardians didn’t receive a proper send off. Of course, not having the person who made the team widely popular is even more disappointing, but that is the nature of the business.

It should be pointed out that Disney and Marvel Studios have tried to get the ball rolling on Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 by finding a new director. But that has not worked out well.

Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi was rumored to have been offered the job, but he has said that it would not be happening. While at the Winter TCAs to help promote What We Do in the Shadows, Waititi said this about the rumors:

“For me, those are James (Gunn)’s films. Going into something like that with his stamp all over his films, would be like going into someone’s house and saying “˜Hey, I’m your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now. It feels kind of awkward.”

There were even a couple of attempts to stop the firing from happening. The cast themselves took to social media to try to sway Disney’s decision to not fire Gunn. They even signed a joint letter. But it did not work. And rather than figure everything out with a new director and new script, it looks like Disney will be looking for someone who will take over Gunn’s work.

It may be great that Gunn’s DNA will still be in the film, but that doesn’t bring us any closer to finding his replacement. And although Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said it’s a matter of when not if, it feels like this movie isn’t happening any time soon.

Meanwhile it looks like James Gunn has found a new job. He’s now in talks to direct the next Suicide Squad film he was already writing the screenplay for.
