They Both Die At The End

HBO already has multiple projects in the works from J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions, including Jordan Peele’s Lovecraft Country and the first TV series Abrams is also writing since Fringe, titled Demimonde. They also produce the current HBO series Westworld, which is heading into its third season.

Now they’re adding another, a sci-fi comedy titled They Both Die at the End. The show, which will be written and executive produced by co-creator of Comedy Central’s The Other Two and former SNL writer Chris Kelly, is based on author Adam Silvera‘s book of the same name. It’s set in a future when people are notified on the day they’re going to die, and follows a group—who are all connected to a pair of teenage boys at the center of the story—as they experience their “scary, funny, weird, hopeful, romantic, and unexpected final hours.”

Here’s more on the book from its Amazon page:

Adam Silvera reminds us that there’s no life without death and no love without loss in this devastating yet uplifting story about two people whose lives change over the course of one unforgettable day.

On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They’re going to die today.

Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they’re both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There’s an app for that. It’s called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure””to live a lifetime in a single day.

It should be noted that HBO hasn’t given a series order to They Both Die at the End yet, it’s only in development at the moment. The show is set up at Warner Bros. Television, which has an overall deal with Bad Robot.

The question is, will Abrams continue working with Warner Bros. well into the future. He’s currently in the midst of seeking a new mega-deal somewhere, and WB, Disney, and all of the biggest names are expected to send potentially unheard of offers his way in hopes of acquiring his talents.
