Marvel Studios has been known to attract some pretty big A-listers to join their superhero and supervillain ranks. And now it looks like they are bringing in one of the biggest names.
According to new reports Angelina Jolie is said to be in talks to join The Eternals, which follows a team of intergalactic superbeings. The film is being directed by Chloé Zhao. More on the report below.
THR says Jolie will be a part of the film which is said to be “a love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.” It’s unclear which part Jolie will play. Very little is known about the upcoming project, but it is a title that will usher in the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It’s important to stress that Jolie is not officially signed on to be a part of the project. There have been cases in the past where Marvel looked at some very exciting prospects like trying to recruit Joaquin Phoenix to play Doctor Strange. Of course, we all know how that worked out in the end.
Created by Jack Kirby in 1976, which succeeded his New Gods title published in 1971, The Eternals centers on a cosmic entity known as the Celestials, who genetically experimented on humans. There’s Ikaris, a being who channels cosmic energy to greatly enhance his senses. He also has regenerative healing powers, flight, psionic powers, matter transmutation, and teleportation. Then there’s Sersi, who has superhuman strength and durability, and molecular and atomic manipulation. And because they have been endowed with great powers by the Celestials, all of them have superhuman durability, which makes them nearly immortal.
Jolie’s upcoming projects include Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to one of Disney’s first live-action adaptations of their animated classics. She will also be in the live-action/animation hybrid The One and Only Ivan, which she is also producing. She also has a role in Come Away, which is being directed by Brenda Chapman.
Directed by Zhao using a script written by Matthew Firpo and Ryan Firpo, Marvel Studios has not yet set a release date for The Eternals. The studio hasn’t been forthcoming on any of their projects surrounding Phase 4. I guess we will just have to wait and see.
