Time travel can be a very fickle thing. There are no one set of rules that anyone abides by. And that is pretty clear in Terminator: Dark Fate, which not only brings back a seasoned Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and an aged T-800 unit (Arnold Schwarzenegger), as well as John Connor himself. But this time, it will be Edward Furlong, who originated the on-screen character in Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

The news broke today during Paramount’s panel for Terminator: Dark Fate at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

However, John’s role in the film remains to be seen. Will it be a substantial one or something that amounts to a cameo? One would think that it would have to be somewhat significant given the character’s importance within the Terminator universe. We will have to wait and see.

While John Connor is mentioned in the original 1984 Terminator film, he doesn’t make his on-screen appearance until the 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day, where Furlong played the character as a 10-year-old boy. Nick Stahl then played him in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, followed by Christian Bale in Terminator: Salvation. After that, he was played by Jason Clarke in Terminator Genisys – that John was infected by a virus that became the very thing he was trying to destroy.

Now, it may be hard to keep up with all the changes and time paradoxes, but director Tim Miller says Terminator: Dark Fate won’t follow any of the films that have come after Terminator 2: Judgment Day. So don’t worry about any time paradoxes. Everything will be fine.

As Terminator fans will tell you, John Connor will grow up to be the leader of the Resistance against their machine overlords. He’s had to be protected numerous times throughout the years as the machines have sent various models of robot assassins to kill John and/or his mom. So how will the story change now that he is back? Going by the film’s official plot synopsis, we know that the Terminators are they setting their sights on other people, but will they continue to target John Connor too?

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

“27 years after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a new, modified liquid metal Terminator (Gabriel Luna) is sent from the future by Skynet in order to terminate Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), a hybrid cyborg human (Mackenzie Davis), and her friends. Sarah Connor comes to their aid, as well as the original Terminator, for a fight for the future.”

Terminator: Dark Fate also stars Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, Gabriel Luna, and Diego Boneta.

Written by David Goyer, Justin Rhodes, and Billy Ray, Terminator: Dark Fate opens in theaters on November 1, 2019.
