The Matrix

The Matrix is still hailed as one of the best sci-fi actioners of all time, and its overwhelmingly huge success would eventually lead to two more sequels: The Matrix Revolutions and The Matrix Revelations – both of which paled in comparison to the original but were still just as successful.

Fans hoped that the stories would continue on in a fourth installment. Especially since the final Matrix film had an open-ended conclusion. And it looks like that is becoming a reality all these years later as reports confirm that Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Lana Wachowski are returning for The Matrix 4. More on the report below.

Variety was the first to break the news that Reeves, Moss, and Wachowski would be back for the fourth installment of The Matrix film franchise. Here’s what Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich had to say the announcement:

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering “˜The Matrix’ with Lana. Lana is a true visionary””a singular and original creative filmmaker””and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in “˜The Matrix’ universe.”

It’s not clear why Lilly Wachowski is not returning. She was the other half who helped The Matrix become what it is now. However, according to Lana, it sounds like she had some input in creating the story:

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

As Wachowski stated, it has been 20 years since The Matrix first arrived in theaters. It was a blend of every geek’s dream, from its kung-fu action inspiration to the anime-style sequences. Additionally, there were themes of questioning realities, free will, our place in the grand scheme of humanity and reality, and the relationship between the mind, body, and soul.

Now, it is no secret that WB has been trying to get The Matrix 4 off of the ground. According to Variety, complications involving producing rights were a factor in delaying the sequel. However, things seem to be picking up speed now that Keanu Reeves has made a huge success over the summer with John Wick 3 and Toy Story 4. He is currently in production on Bill & Ted Face the Music.

Wachowski co-wrote the screenplay with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell, and production is set to begin in 2020.

It’s unclear what the sequel will be about. Though The Matrix Revelations seemed like it marked the end of the franchise, it will be interesting to see how the story will be continued. But one key actor you may notice who is missing is Laurence Fishburne, who played Morpheus in the original trilogy. Sources tell Variety that his character may return, but he will be played by a younger actor. We will just have to wait for more information as it comes in.
