D23 Expo 2019: Emma Stone Will Bring Punk Rock Vibes To Disney’s Live-Action Film ‘Cruella’

Cruella starring Emma Stone

Disney will be continuing their course to release more live-action adaptations of their animated classics as long as they are box office successes. But bringing 101 Dalmatians’ character Cruella De Vil to the big screen in a live-action feature might take a different approach to some of the previous films. Like with Maleficent, Cruella will center on the titular character’s evil journey. The upcoming live-action movie will star Emma Stone as Cruella, a diva and practitioner of cruelty to animals.

Although Stone couldn’t be at the D23 Expo this weekend, attendees were treated to a first look at Stone as Cruella. See more below for our on-site coverage from D23.

During the short video, Stone revealed that Cruella will have punk rock vibes to it, and that it would explore the early days of the villain. While she was explaining what the film would be about, she had a hard time focusing and was constantly distracted by something to her right. Giving off those classic Cruella diva vibes, it is revealed that the thing she was distracted by was a Dalmatian.

As soon as she was done, she stormed off saying that she was going back to her trailer. Of course, it was all for the film and to stay in character.

Though it is still in the early stages of production, we learned that Emma Thompson will also be a part of the film, that will be set in 1970s London.

Based on the image of Stone above, we can see that the film is really honing in on that punk rock vibe, with the wild and dramatic hairstyle, the leather clothing, and the girl boss tone she is setting with the three dogs she has on a leash. Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry can be seen in the background as well. The two will be playing Cruella’s henchmen.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, Cruella, which was originally set to open in theaters December 23, 2020, will now debut on May 28, 2021.
