He’s a wealthy A-list actor who’s a total babe, but yet is still seemingly approachable; he’s kind and generous, even giving up part of his salary for a film crew; he’s like a regular person riding the NYC subway system, except he actually offers up his seat to others. You know him, he’s the Internet’s boyfriend, Keanu Reeves! And now he’s the subject of For Your Consideration: Keanu Reeves, a new book composed of critical essays and tidbits about this Hollywood superstar and all-around nice guy.

In the book, which is the second in Quirk Books’s new For Your Consideration series, authors Larissa Zageris and Kitty Curran (co-authors of another Quirk title, My Lady’s Choosing: An Interactive Romance Novel) take a look at the 55-year-old actor, who inadvertently launched the current “Keanussance.” While he started getting recognition with River’s Edge (1986) and Dangerous Liaisons (1988), it was his starring role as Ted, the time-traveling high schooler in 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, that really put him on the map. Through the 1990s, his star kept rising, with Point Break (co-starring Patrick Swayze), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (with Winoma Ryder), Speed (with Sandra Bullock), and many more before going supernova as Neo, “the One,” in the 1999 Wachowskis film The Matrix. Could he get any higher?

Umm, yes, yes he could. Because while everyone loved Keanu the star, the action hero, the hunk, in the recent social media/Internet age, it’s become clear to the masses that he’s also a really great, down-to-earth guy.

Over the course of five lighthearted yet in-depth essays in this 142-page paperback, the authors explore the life of Keanu Reeves in a manner that’s part serious biography, part straight-up fangirl exposition. We get the evolution of the actor from most excellent dude, to action hero, to romantic lead, to mega-star with some backlash along the way in there from haters and critics for his box office flops, miscastings, bad accents, and projects that were just plain misunderstood. This leads up to a section on his on-screen kissing scenes, and later a multiple-choice quiz you can take to determine which one of Keanu’s characters named John you are.

Least you think this book is an offshoot from teen magazine, know that there are no glossy full-color photos, no hearts drawn around his head, no tips on how to become his dream girl. Instead, there’s a gorgeous cover portrait by Mercedes deBellard, classy interior illustrations throughout by Ben Mounsey-Wood, and some tasteful fanfic.

For Your Consideration: Keanu Reeves is totally aimed at Keanu fangirls and fanboys. I mean, you’re not going to give this book to your grandma to read because she’ll be like, huh, what’s a Johnny Meme-Onic? Although, if you did give it to Grandma, she undoubtedly will gain a new appreciation for the actor and perhaps she too will find out which Keanu character she’s most like. Fans of Keanu Reeves will absolutely appreciate this book, while those who have a general knowledge of him will definitely enjoy this off-beat look at the man, his career, and the cultural phenomenon he’s sparked.

From the publisher:

This illustrated collection of humorous essays and fun extras makes the case for one of our most iconic celebrities, from Bill and Ted to John Wick.

For an actor who’s been in so many mega-hits and equally mega misses, it can be tough to track Keanu Reeves’s accomplishments. But true fans know that Keanu is so much more than his Bill and Ted persona, both onscreen and off. During his long career””over 30 years, though you wouldn’t know it from his immortal looks””he has constantly subverted Hollywood stereotypes and expectations. He’s the type to start his own publishing company, reread Hamlet, write a grown-up children’s book, photobomb people’s weddings, eat lunch alone in the park while looking very sad, and give away his salary to the film crew.

For Your Consideration: Keanu Reeves examines the ways in which Keanu strives to be kind and excellent in work and in life. The authors also explore various Internet conspiracies about his age, help you identify which Sad Keanu meme you are, give you the Keanu and Winona Ryder fanfic your heart desires, and much, much more.
