In The Night Wood By Dale Bailey Header

In The Night Wood
Hardcover | Kindle
By Dale Bailey
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Release Date: October 9, 2018

With his marriage falling apart due to a series of tragic events, Charles Hayden – a literary scholar – and his wife Erin take a trip to Yorkshire, England to stay at the family estate of the 19th century children’s author, Caedmon Hollow. Hollow’s only book, In The Night Wood, is the subject of Charles’ research and a way to hopefully turn his recent misfortunes around; however, as secrets regarding Hollow’s past begin to reveal themselves, and small-town life threatens to place Charles in a vicious, repetition of the past, the veil between reality and fantasy becomes unclear in the most haunting of ways.

Wow! That was the exact exclamation I used out loud when finishing In the Night Wood by Dale Bailey, and the feeling remains the same 24 hours later while writing this review.

Lucifer's Star By C.T. Phipps And Michael Suttkus Header

I regularly follow a couple of fantasy and science fiction-related Facebook pages. The first, SPFBO (Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off), you’ve probably heard me talk about in the past, as it is where I discovered previous guest, Devin Madson. Created by award-winning fantasy author Mark Lawrence, the SPFBO pits 300 self-published fantasy authors’ works in a competition against one another, with popular fantasy blogging sites as the judges. The second page is called Grimdark Fiction Readers and Writers – a page followed by over 5,200 people (both readers and writers, of course) and dedicated to the discussion of all things “grimdark.”

For quite some time, I had seen reviews and comments on both pages by an indie author named C.T. Phipps. Intrigued by his thoughtful engagement with readers and writers alike, I decided to browse his Amazon page to see what his books were all about. Well, let me tell you, I am so glad I did. Phipps has numerous series, from science fiction to fantasy to horror and everything in between, and from what I’ve read thus far (his grimdark space opera, Lucifer’s Star, and his comedic vampire urban fantasy, Straight Outta Fangton), I’ve learned he is both prolific in his number of books and his style of writing.

You may be asking yourself, “what the heck is grimdark?” Well, Lucifer’s Star, by indie authors C.T. Phipps and Michael Suttkus is as grimdark as they come.

Heroes Unleashed

Shared universes in literature and movies are an awesome idea, and when all creators involved are passionate about their individual projects as well as the larger universe itself, amazing things can be accomplished. Just look at what Marvel and Disney have done with their cinematic universe.

Silver Empire – a small independent publisher from husband and wife team Russell Newquist and Morgon Newquist – has set out to create such a world. Russell and Morgon have launched a Kickstarter for “Heroes UnleashedPhase 1, the first set of novels taking place in a shared superhero world. The campaign has almost doubled its goal, now sitting at close to $2K. But there’s still 11 days to support Silver Empire’s endeavor!

I was able to have a chat with some of the creators and minds behind “Heroes Unleashed,” which you can check out below!

Garrison Girl Attack On Titan By Rachel Aaron Header

Garrison Girl: An Attack on Titan Novel
Paperback | Kindle
By Rachel Aaron
Publisher: Quirk Books
Release Date: August 7, 2018

This may sound like sacrilege to the diehard Attack on Titan fan, but I’ve only seen the first season of the anime. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the series; in fact, I thoroughly enjoyed it. But for whatever reasons they might be, I haven’t been able to catch up; nor have I read the manga that the anime is based on, or read any of the other adaptations. Yet, when I read the description for Garrison Girl by Rachel Aaron, there was something that intrigued me. Perhaps it was due to the fact that it is a standalone story with a new set of characters, allowing for a seamless transition to a different medium without having had to catch up on all of the other forms of Attack on Titan media; or maybe it was the concept of a girl of nobility, laying aside her pre-planned “responsibilities” to try to make a difference in a world gone mad. Either way, I’m glad I had the opportunity to read Aaron’s novel – my first from the author – because it is awesome!
