With all the reboots that happen in the movie industry, you would think that people would eventually rebel against all the rehashing. But then a gem like this one comes along and renews everyone’s faith in the concept of re-imagining.

Joss Whedon created one of the most dynamic characters to ever grace the page or screen, this was enhanced through television, film, comics, and books. These all built upon one another, creating what is essentially known as the Buffyverse. BOOM! Studios has rebooted this and given it a more modern update for today’s fans. Dungeons & Dragons: Ghosts Of Saltmarsh
Hardcover
D&D Accessory
Wizards Of The Coast
Release Date: May 21, 2019

It was just yesterday that I was making pirate jokes and telling my wife she needed to get an eyepatch (full disclosure, she had allergy issues). But today I am all about the seafaring adventures detailed within Ghosts of Saltmarsh, sans pirate jokes. In fact, this compilation holds the keys to almost endless possibilities.

When we talk about Dungeons & Dragons we seldom think of anything on the high seas, but the modules have long been available for play. Dungeon Masters the world over have delighted in sending player characters to their doom, er, I mean on adventures.

Newbury & Hobbes: The Undying
Written by George Mann

Titan Comics
Release Date: April 30, 2019
Cover Price: $16.99

I had absolutely no idea who or what this would entail but the cover looked amazingly steampunk-ish so I decided to go for it. I cannot even begin to tell you how glad I am that I made that decision. Newbury & Hobbes: The Undying is apparently the first graphic novel in the franchise but there are a plethora of books to be had, as well.

Note to self: buy them all. Why, you ask? Well, let’s just say that this was more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Though, to be fair, I have never seen nor played with a barrel of monkeys.

The Women's War by Jenna Glass header

The Women’s War
Hardcover | Kindle | Audiobook
By Jenna Glass
Publisher: Del Rey, an imprint of Random House Books
Release Date: March 6, 2019

To say that this book is a work of feminist fantasy is a lot like saying the ocean is wet. The Women’s War is a definitive work of raising women up in a patriarchal society, of that there can be no question. However, there is so much more to the story that it defies simplistic characterizations. This tale strives, and often succeeds, to ring the bell of resistance in an otherwise bleak world devoid of equality.

The best part of this novel is, hands down, the depth of character that author Jenna Glass brings to her work. So much time and paper is devoted to all of the characters that the setting seems to suffer quite often. As the reader connects quickly and strongly with the protagonist Alysoon, so do they empathetically bond with the women who are subjugated at every turn. This is a man’s world and not many are apt to forget it; even the magic of this world is divided. But it is through this division that something new has arisen. Something that will not just equalize but enable the women to turn the tables on any who would oppress them.

I have been a lifelong fan of Bettie Page and must admit that the zany adventure comics that Dynamite has been producing with her as the leading lady have entertained me to no end.

More than just a pretty face, Bettie has saved the world several times over. Her uncommon wit and ability to handle herself have made these new comics ongoing favorites of mine. It is because of that love that I wanted to alert you to the Bettie Page Dynamite Covers Collection.

Release Date: April 3, 2019
Cover Price: $3.99

I honestly have not paid too much attention to the comics involving The Jim Henson Company. I guess I always associated them with the Muppets and therefore failed to engage with them. How wrong I was.

Jim Henson’s The StoryTeller: Sirens #1 is produced by Archaia Entertainment and is actually related to the television series of the same name from the eighties. I actually do not remember the show but I was seventeen when it started so that probably explains it; I was always busy back then.

The War Within
The Great God’s War Book 2
Hardcover | Kindle | Audiobook
By Stephen R. Donaldson
Publisher: Penguin | Berkley
Release Date: April 2, 2019

Any long-time reader of fantasy or science fiction knows of Stephen R. Donaldson. Those who have read his works are, more often than not, fans for life. This holds true for myself, at least. I distinctly remember poring over the pages of his Thomas Covenant series, breathless awaiting the next installment as soon as the current book was consumed. And it would be so easy to compare The War Within, this newest book in his current series, The Great God’s War, to those that I loved in the early eighties. But that would not do justice to this new book and the care with which it was created.
