Disney’s live-action take on the 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil has a director in sights.

It’s being reported that Craig Gillespie, director of the Academy Award winning I, Tonya and the 2011 Fright Night remake, has entered into negotiations to direct Cruella. The spinoff, which is similar to Disney’s villain-centric Sleeping Beauty spinoff Maleficent, is set to star Oscar winner Emma Stone in the title role.

Just when you’ve thought you’ve seen all the live-action reimaginings that Disney could pull off, they come up with yet another one. 101 Dalmatians is a favorite among Disney fans, and now like Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon, Beauty And The Beast, Pinocchio, Dumbo, Mulan, Winnie The Pooh, the untitled Aladdin prequel Genie, The Sword in the Stone, Tinkerbell, and Prince Charming. But it doesn’t look like it will be just another straight forward adaptation.

The script, which is being written by Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey, Saving Mr. Banks), doesn’t have a director yet, but the studio is aiming high for its lead character. According to new reports, Emma Stone (Birdman, The Help) is now in talks to play Cruella de Vil. More on the story below.

Disney In Depth Banner

Summer is creeping around the corner. Now represents the perfect period to catch up on old movies or those you may have missed. Disney dog-themed movies exist in abundance. What better way to deal with those impending “dog days of summer” than to revisit some classic canine fare, or perhaps catch them for the very first time.

Here are five of my favorites that make me shout “bow wow,” organized according to theme. And no, none of the Air Buddies or Beverly Hills Chihuahua films reach even close to making the cut.

Cruella Devill Header

Recently, Disney has turned to adapting their animated features into live-action films. Alice In Wonderland set the foundation for upcoming titles like Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty, and now the studio is prepping for yet another live-action film based on one of their famed villainesses.

According to The Hollywood reporter, Disney has just hired Cinderella and The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna to write the script for Cruella. As you may have guessed, the film will center on Cruella de Vil, animal cruelty extraordinaire and villainess of 101 Dalmatians.

Week of Geek: Disney's 101 Dalmatians

By Stephanie G

102 Dalmatians
(2000)
Directed by Kevin Lima
Starring Glenn Close, Ioan Gruffudd, Tim McInnerny, Eric Idle, Alice Evans
Walt Disney Pictures Home Entertainment
Release Date: September 16, 2008

Many sequels fall under the pressure of their predecessors. Disney made a great attempt to try and recreate the magic of the first 101 Dalmatians live-action film by re-casting Glenn Close, whose portrayal of the villain Cruella DeVil brought the first movie great success. Unfortunately, this film proved that only her performance was worth watching.

102 Dalmatians begins with the puppy-loving Ella, who has been rehabilitated from her evil puppy-hating ways and gets out of jail on parole. In order to acclimate back into society and to serve as a classic bit of comedic irony, she decides to save a dog pound that is threatened by eviction. Unfortunately her rehabilitation trance doesn’t last for long, with the sound of Big Ben, she snaps out of sweet kind Ella and turns back into the fur-obsessed Cruella DeVil.

I must say this movie definitely tops the wardrobe department from the last film. With the theme centered around fashion, it gave the costume designers a great opportunity to push the limit on what they could create using only black and white. Cruella’s wardrobe, which changed practically every five minutes, did keep me entertained and eager to see what she would be wearing next.

Directed by Stephen Herek
Starring Glenn Close, Jeff Daniels, Joely Richardson, Joan Plowright, Hugh Laurie, Mark Williams
Walt Disney Pictures Home Entertainment
Release Date: September 16, 2008

In this 1996 Disney offering, the studio dug into their animated back catalog to make a live-action version that was very faithful to their 1961 hit 101 Dalmatians.

As with the original, Roger (Jeff Daniels) and Anita (Joely Richardson) are thrown together when their dalmatians Pongo and Perdy fall in love and then play matchmaker with their owners. The foursome soon become a happy family living in their cozy London flat, with Perdy expecting puppies. Unfortunately, the evil, eccentric Cruella DeVil (Glenn Close) wants the puppies for herself so she can make a fur coat out of them. When Roger and Anita refuse to give her the puppies, Cruella resorts to getting her henchmen to abduct them.

Starring Jason Alexander, Jodi Benson, Barry Bostwick, Maurice LaMarche, Michael Lerner
Walt Disney Pictures Home Entertainment
Release Date: September 16, 2008

101 Dalmatians 2: Patch’s London Adventure takes place right before the epilogue of its 1961 predecessor with Roger and Anita Radcliffe and their 101 dalmatians getting ready to move from their London flat to a large farm in the country dubbed “Dalmatian Plantation” (the same as the tune from the first movie).

As with original animated 101 Dalmatians, the adult male dalmatian Pongo begins the narration of this 2003 direct-to-video sequel, which sees the Radcliffe clan accidentally leaving behind the adventure-seeking puppy Patch on moving day. Feeling like he’s nothing more than one out of 101, Patch decides not to find his family, but instead head into the city for an audition for his favorite TV show Thunderbolt Adventure Hour, which stars the title superhero German Shepherd who Patch idolizes.

Pongo is a dalmatian who lives in London with his “pet” Roger, a human who works as a songwriter. One day, Pongo decides that both Roger and he need companions, so while out for a walk in the park one day, Pongo gets the attention of another dalmatian, Perdita, and her “pet” human Anita. Roger and Anita eventually fall in love, as does Pongo and Perdita and they all live happily together … but not for long.

After finding out that Perdita is pregnant, an old acquaintance of Anita — the evil wealthy Cruella De Vil — shows up demanding the puppies with the intention of using making a dog-skin coat. Anita and Roger refuse to give in to Cruella’s demands, so Cruella hires too bumbling goons to kidnap the 15 puppies once they’re born. While the humans search for the puppies, the dalmatian parents try their own methods of locating their babies with the help of other animals in the area.

Disney’s 1961 animated feature 101 Dalmatians has stood the test of time, not only with its animation, but also with its tugging of the heartstrings storytelling.
