Academy Awards Statues Oscars

When the Academy announced that it would be making some changes to their signature Oscars ceremony in order to increase ratings, let’s just say it wasn’t met with a lot of praise. One of the changes included a shorter telecast, which meant we wouldn’t get to see some of the smaller Academy Awards being handed out. But the biggest change and the one that has been met with the most resistance is the introduction of the “Popular Award.”

There was no word on how a best popular film would be determined and how one would earn itself a nomination, but it looks like that award will not happen anytime soon. That’s because the Academy has decided to postpone it, at least for now.

More on the story below.

Academy Awards Statues

The Academy Awards have had a few major criticisms throughout the years. The telecast of the Oscars ceremony is far too long (sometimes three to four hours long) and it also includes awards few people really care about. As a result, the award show’s ratings have taken a huge hit. So in order to address these issues, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences board of governors have announced what appears to be the worst possible solutions. The telecast runtime will be cut down and there will be a new “Popular Film” award category. And as you can guess, people aren’t too thrilled about this. More on the story below.

Oscars 2018 Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

The 90th Annual Academy Awards ceremony is tonight and and the crop of nominees for Oscars 2018 is just a tad different, perhaps echoing the changing landscapes of Hollywood. There are not one, but TWO genre films nominated for Best Picture (Get Out and The Shape of Water), and diversity continues to improve this year.

Last year after Moonlight became only the second film from an African American director to win Best Picture, Get Out‘s Jordan Peele is nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture this year. Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) is likewise only the fifth female Best Director nominee and only Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, 2010) has won. Celebrating a year in film that will unfortunately be remembered for the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the #MeToo movement, female nominees and strong performances are all over the show. It’ll be interesting to hear how host Jimmy Kimmel handles the Weinstein-sized elephant in the room.

But let’s face it, you’re here for predictions, so let’s get to it… if you’re filling out a ballot, I nailed ALL the major awards last year, so take that under consideration…
