And now they’ve taken another huge step with Birds Of Prey, an all-female DC superhero ensemble. Directed by Cathy Yan, the film will see Margot Robbie reprising her DCEU role as Harley Quinn, who will be joined by DC characters Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya in a fight to defend Gotham City against one of Batman’s most notable villains, Black Mask.

While Robbie is the only confirmed actress to board the film, a new report says Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Justina Machado,, and more are being considered for various roles. More on the story here below.

Black Mask

Batman may have a lot of villains in his rogue gallery, but many of those A-list villains have appeared as different versions in all of the known film franchises. That being said, the current DCEU is building around the Batman family, which would, in turn, allow it to use other Batman villains that may not appear in the Caped Crusader’s films. Now, new reports confirm that Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, will be the main villain of the Birds Of Prey film that is currently under development with Warner Bros. and DC Films. More on the story below.

Suicide Squad Margot Robbie

Wonder Woman marked a shift in the filmmaking dynamic. Not only was it the first female-superhero led film to be released in the new age of superhero films, it was also the first to be directed by a female filmmaker. Now the studio has found another female director to helm an untitled Harley Quinn movie, with Margot Robbie returning to reprise her role that she made famous in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.

According to new reports, Cathy Yan is in talks to direct the Harley Quinn movie. While this may be one of many DCEU titles that has the character in it, it appears that there are plans to condense some of those into one film. More on the story below.

Birds of Prey

Comics writer Jim Zubkavich (Skullkickers, Pathfinder) announced today via his blog that he will not be writing DC’s Birds of Prey as planned. The writer, who usually just goes by the name Jim Zub, was scheduled to take over the book starting in March 2013. However, with DC’s comic solicitations set to hit this week, the news was going to come out when his name would be noticeably absent from solicitation text.

Zub had this to say about the situation: “DC has decided to go in a different direction with Birds of Prey and it’s been decided that I won’t be the writer on board the series after all.”

Night of the Owls by Greg Capullo

Following the lead in Scott Snyder’s current run on Batman, DC Comics has posted a graphic containing all of the titles that will be participating in the Batman crossover event Night of the Owls.

Night of the Owls started this week with a prelude in Kyle Higgins and Eddy Barrows’ Nightwing #8 which kickstarted the first issue in the crossover event, Batman #8 by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. The concept of the mini-event is that Gotham City has a sordid past that even Bruce Wayne was unaware of. The Court of Owls, an evil group of assassins, has been controlling the fate of Gotham the entire time. There’s much more to the story including Dick Grayson’s lineage and an all out assault against the Wayne family and other leaders of Gotham City. It’s a war of Bats vs. Owls when most of the Bat-family is called upon to participate.
