Thursday was day one of this year’s New York Comic-Con at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan and for the third straight year, NYCC welcomed the stars and creative forces behind IFC’s Stan Against Evil. Creator Dana Gould describes the show as the X-Files meets his dad. The show stars John C. Imagine if Planet Of The Apes‘s Ape City had been a New York City-like metropolis and its simian inhabitants much more technologically advanced. That is what Rod Serling had in mind when he penned a screenplay from Pierre Boulle’s novel for the 1968 film for 20th Century Fox. But the studio felt Serling’s adaptation would be too costly to translate to the big screen, so they hired Michael Wilson (who had previously adapted Boulle’s The Bridge over the River Kwai) to rewrite the dialogue and revise the script to give the apes a more primitive society. Now, Serling’s original vision has been brought to life in Planet Of The Apes: Visionaries, a new graphic novel from BOOM! Studios.

Dana Gould interview

On Thursday, the Big Apple welcomed back New York Comic-Con. The 4-day geek spectacular emanates from its home base at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, but has spread to include the theatre at Madison Square Garden, Hammerstein Ballroom, and even the Stephen A. Schwarzman Library building. Hammerstein opened its NYCC 2017 run with a tour de force day featuring Robert Kirkman of The Walking Dead, Kevin Smith and the Comic Book Men, and the cast of IFC’s Stan Against Evil. Stan Against Evil creator and writer Dana Gould was joined by stars John C. McGinley and Janet Varney as they prepped fans for the upcoming second season, which debuts on November 1st. I took part in press roundtable to find out more about the show’s sophomore run.

Professional Day opened at 9:30 AM at the New York Public Library located at 5th avenue and 42nd Street and events are also emanating from the theater at Madison Square Garden and Hammerstein Ballroom. I spent most of Day 1 located at Hammerstein with the gang from IFC’s Stan Against Evil. The horror comedy begins its second season on November 1st, and creator, writer, and producer Dana Gould as well as stars Janet Varney (Evie) and Stan himself, John C. McGinley took the stage to entertain the crowd.

‘Stan Against Evil’ Renewed for Season 2!

Stan Against Evil Header

Horror is this “it” thing on TV right now, and horror-comedy is even better. Ash vs. Evil Dead just wrapped a second great season on Starz, and has already been renewed for season 3. Scream Queens is blending horror and insane comedy on FOX Tuesday nights. This fall, IFC joined the party with Dana Gould’s Stan Against Evil which premiered in early November. I watched the pilot back at NYCC in October and it instantly hooked me. Stan is played by John C. McGinley who brings the same rough sarcasm he did as Dr. Perry Cox on Scrubs only this time with a shade of melancholy. The show ran a limited run of 8 half hour episodes, run back to back for four straight weeks. IFC has just renewed Stan for a second season.

Debuting at NYCC, Stan Against Evil was created by Dana Gould, former writer for The Simpsons. Imagine your significant other, your soulmate, your one and only has passed away. Now alone with his odd daughter Denise (Deborah Baker Jr.) he is fired after an incident at his wife, Claire’s funeral. Stan has old world views and is thus aghast when a woman, Evie Barret (Janet Varney) replaces him as Sheriff. Even harder to accept and understand is finding out his wife was actually a demon hunter, protecting him and the town from a legendary curse. With her gone, demons are out in droves to put Stan, Evie and all law enforcement.

Stan Against Evil NYCC 2016-03

After a long day at New York Comic-Con that started by waiting on a 90-minute line for Ash vs Evil Dead at 9:30AM, I sat down at the Stan Against Evil screening at 5:15PM. And I could not have planned a better opening/closing part to my day. Stan Against Evil was created by Dana Gould, a former stand-up comic who has written for The Simpsons. The television show focuses on a heartbroken widower, whose life spirals out of control when his wife passes away. Soon, he is fired from his job as police chief of Willard’s Mill, NH, and is forced to salvage a relationship with his quirky daughter whom he barely knows. If this sounds all doom and gloom, fear not my friends… Willard’s Mill is beset by witches and demons and somehow, it’s up to Stan to save the day.
