Aladdin

Based on the 1992 animated classic of the same name, Aladdin was one of Disney’s first animated features to have characters of color. Representation is important in this day and age because it allows people of color and the marginalized to see themselves in the characters seen on screen. So it was significantly important to reflect that in the casting of the live-action adaptation of Aladdin. Though there were reports of some casting issues, director Guy Ritchie and the rest of the Disney team were dedicated to finding the right actors for the film. And they found them in Mena Massoud, who plays the title character, and Naomi Scott, who plays Princess Jasmine.

Geeks of Doom and a group of journalists were invited to attend the global press conference in Los Angeles, CA, where Massoud and Scott talked about what it was like to be a part of the production, working with Ritchie, and how they all infused some of their own personalities and quirks into the characters while also respecting the animated original. Check out what they had to say below.

Rey (Daisy Ridley) in Star Wars: Episode IX

There is an immense amount of anticipation when it comes to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The film is the last entry in the Skywalker saga and brings to a close to a nine-chapter story arc that first started back in 1977. While we may be bidding one final farewell to these characters, much of the story remains a mystery.

We only got a small tease of what’s to come a few weeks back at Star Wars Celebration, where we saw the first teaser for the upcoming film. Of course, fans were excited to hear the Luke Skywalker voice over, that Lando Calrissian laugh, and a very tearful Rey embracing General Leia. But the one thing that got fans riled up was the Emperor’s laugh. The menacing character has been a dark and evil fixture since the original trilogy.

Now we are getting yet another look at the film. So to speak. It’s another behind the scenes look from Vanity Fair’s Annie Leibovitz, whose engaging photos provide an intimate look at the production of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Check out the new gallery, plus what some of the cast and crew had to say below.

Will Smith As Genie In Aladdin

Disney’s live-action take on Aladdin will see Will Smith bring the high-spirited and energetic Genie to life. With his own brand of charisma and a bit of hip-hop flair, this Genie is not like the Robin Williams take in the animated original, but the performance still pays homage to the late comedian. In fact, the actor says the remake is the highlight of his career. And you can see how much fun he is having in that performance.

Geeks of Doom and a group of journalists were invited to sit down at the Aladdin global press conference where Smith spoke about believing in that Disney magic, how he made some of those memorable songs his own, finding a career resurgence, and what representation means to him. Check out what he had to see below.

Aladdin
Director: Guy Ritchie
Writer: Guy Ritchie, John August
Cast: Will Smith, Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Alan Tudyk, Billy Magnussen
Distributor: Walt Disney Studios
Rated PG | Runtime: 128 Minutes
Release Date: May 24, 2019

There is absolutely no room for error when it comes to adapting a Disney animated classic into a live-action film. The studio has recently found some modest critical and commercial success with some of their titles. But the one common thread that each of them shares is that all of them are a part of a legacy and each has a large existing fanbase. So the bar of expectation for a live-action take on Aladdin is pretty high. Especially when it comes to capturing the same spirit of the story, themes, and music. But most of all, the characters, like Aladdin, Jasmine, and the unforgettable Genie.

Luckily, Guy Ritchie‘s take on the film is something that stays true to the spirit of the animated original while still maintaining his style of filmmaking. A huge surprise at best, the film captures everything that we love about the animated original through its cast, especially with Will Smith‘s Genie and Naomi Scott‘s scene-stealing performance as Princess Jasmine. With some slight updates to the story and songs, along with a brand new song from Alan Menken, this version of Aladdin is an upbeat and fun contemporary take on the 1992 original.

TOY STORY 4

The entire premise of Toy Story 4 asks the question, what makes a toy a toy? It’s a deep and existential question that has never been explored in any of the previous Toy Story films. This comes about when Bonnie brings home Forky (Tony Hale), a googly-eyed spork with pipe-cleaners for arms and a broken popsicle stick for legs. It just sets the stage for a much bigger adventure when Bonnie takes all of her toys on a family road trip, and Woody (Tom Hanks), being the honorable sheriff that he is, promises to bring back Forky when he runs away.

Pixar has now released the final trailer for Toy Story 4, and you can check it out below.

James Gunn

Last summer, James Gunn was in the midst of preparing for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the closing installment of the Guardians trilogy. What happened after that can only be described as a whirlwind of crazy. First he was fired by Disney for some old tweets that were dug up. Then he was hired by WB to write The Suicide Squad, which eventually led to him directing as well. Finally, he was rehired by Disney to finish the Guardians trilogy.

The filmmaker, who is usually vocal on social media, has been silent about those recent events. At least up until now. Gunn is now opening up about what has happened to him, how he thought he would never be rehired, and the status of both The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. See what he had to say below.

Star Wars Title Logo

There has been some debate as to which Star Wars films will follow Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. We knew that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was developing a new trilogy and that Game of Thrones creators and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were developing their own project. But we didn’t know which would come first. The recent release of Disney’s film release schedule didn’t reveal any clue as to which one would hit theaters first either, but it did show us that we will be getting at least three films in the coming years.

But now Bob Iger has revealed that Benioff and Weiss’s project will be the next Star Wars film we see after The Rise of Skywalker. See what he had to say below.

Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil #3

Disney has released the first teaser trailer for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to the hugely successful Maleficent. Angelina Jolie returns to play the titular scorned winged sorceress who cursed Princess Aurora to be put under eternal sleep that can only be dispelled by a kiss. But unlike the traditional live-action adaptations, the film took a much different approach by having the film take place from Maleficent’s perspective and exploring why she was bitter towards the kingdom and the young princess.

Now she’s back, along with Elle Fanning, who reprises her role as Princess Aurora. Joining them will be Michelle Pfeiffer as a new character created for this film. Check out the new trailer and six new images from the film below.
