Fathom Events TCM Classics 2017

If you are bored by the constant stream of sequels and superhero movies, and yearn to see the classics of yesteryear, Fathom Events is there for you. Thanks to the good people at Fathom, 2016 was a great year at the movies for me and my family. I was able to recreate a monumental moment of my childhood, that of my dad taking a 13-year old me to see From Dusk Till Dawn, by taking my 12-year old son Brandon to see the 20th Anniversary showing. We also took in the 20th anniversary of Space Jam, as well as other classics like Planet of the Apes. My wife and I used Fathom Events for date nights, catching several classics throughout the year, like the 40th Anniversary of Taxi Driver and a near Halloween showing of Kubrick’s The Shining.

So what’s on this year’s schedule?

Treasure Trove Of Unsold Atari Video Games and Gear Unearthed In New Mexico Landfill

E.T.

Proving that there is usually a true story behind every urban legend, construction crews recently uncovered an enormous cache of intact, unsold Atari video games and software that have been buried in a landfill located in the desert near the city of Alamogordo, New Mexico, for over three decades.

Among them were the notoriously awful E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial tie-in game that Atari spent millions of dollars to license and create and went on to become a major money loser for the company. Though it initially sold 1.5 million copies upon its release in December 1982, over three million copies were left to collect dust on retailer shelves across the country. Reviews were scathing and within months the game was being discounted for a fraction of its original price. When the hype dissipated, Atari was left $75 million in the red, a staggering loss that nearly destroyed the once-powerful company and left it highly vulnerable to an endless influx of competitors on the growing video game market.

Carlo Rambaldi

Carlo Rambaldi, the three-time Academy Award-winning Italian-born visual effects artist responsible for creating the alien E.T. in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, died today in Lamezia Terme, Italy after a long illness, according to the Washington Post. He was 86 years old.

Born on September 15, 1925 in Vigarano Mainarda, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, Rambaldi got his start in the Italian film industry providing visual effects for films such as Bloody Pit of Horror and Mario Bava’s highly influential sci-fi chiller Planet of the Vampires. He would later reunite with Bava to execute the gory murder sequences for one of the acclaimed filmmaker’s finest films, Twitch of the Death Nerve (a.k.a. A Bay of Blood). In 1971, Rambaldi’s mutilated dog effects for Lucio Fulci’s psychedelic giallo Lizard in a Woman’s Skin were deemed so realistic that the director was prosecuted in Italian court on charges of animal cruelty. Only after Rambaldi presented the fake dog effects in court was Fulci exonerated.

Steven Spielberg Won’t Change ‘E.T.’ and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ For Blu-ray

E.T. (1982)

Steven Spielberg was in attendance at last night’s Los Angeles Times Hero Complex 30th anniversary screening of his seminal adventure epic Raiders of the Lost Ark, the film that introduced Indiana Jones to the world and cemented Harrison Ford‘s movie star status, and at a post-screening Q&A the Academy Award-winning filmmaker took time to address a topic that has been on film fans’ minds over the past few weeks.

During the Q&A session, in which Harrison Ford made a surprise guest appearance, Spielberg fielded questions about the status of the E.T. and the Indiana Jones movies on Blu-ray. The director hinted that both releases were in the works, but then he polled the audience to see if they would have a problem with only the 1982 theatrical release version of E.T. being released on Blu-ray. The answer from the crowd was a loud and resounding “NO!” Spielberg also revealed that he has no intentions of tinkering with Raiders of the Lost Ark for its eventual Blu-ray either.
