Children of the Fleet header Orson Scott Card

Children Of The Fleet
Fleet School Series
Hardcover | Kindle
By Orson Scott Card
Audiobook narrated by Stefan Rudnicki from Macmillan Audio
Publisher: Tor Books | Macmillan
Release Date: October 10, 2017

Just when you thought you would never see another book from the Enderverse, author Orson Scott Card surprises us all with not just a new book, but one with a definitive twist. Children of the Fleet is more than a spin-off or a sequel, it is a completely different perspective of events that unfolded in a previous novel.

The similarities are still there, of course that is to be expected. An exceptional child displaced, but amazing. This one, however, takes a turn for the unexpected, again and again. Our new protagonist is Dabeet Ochoa. He’s a headstrong boy of about ten who is exceptional in every way, including his massive ego. And while the Battle School from previous stories, beginning with 1985’s Ender’s Game, has morphed into the newly minted Fleet School, much has remained the same, including having one Hyrum Graff involved at every level.

SDCC 2013: ‘Ender’s Game’ Panel With Harrison Ford

SDCC 2013: Enders Game panel banner

Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game is a sci-fi classic, hailed for its prescient vision in foreshadowing technologies such as internet forums, push-button warfare, and youth in the military. However, it has often been described as an “unfilmable” property, due to its controversial subject matter and the high expectations of its fans, so I was intensely curious to see the film’s panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con panel.

The panelists in attendance today at Hall H were stars Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, and Hailee Steinfeld, along with director Gavin Hood and producer Roberto Orci. The Nerdist’s Chris Hardwick moderated (continuing a long SDCC tradition).

After a clip was shown featuring new footage, Orci noted that the challenge of adapting a classic novel is finding the right writer, and not loving the book so much as to not be able to make an entertaining film out of it. Steinfeld said it was the first time she’s had to physically train for a movie; her training included Space Camp and military boot camp. Ford was drawn to the film by the moral complexity of the story’s push-button warfare aspects and the manipulation of youth for their motor skill capacities and conceptual freedom. Hood loved bringing the environment of the book to life and again, its complexity. Having characters that wrestle with their own good and evil and finding such great actors as Butterfield and Steinfeld made him feel blessed to direct. Butterfield had to get over the fact that he was acting against Han Solo.

Harryhausen

This week, SNL skewers Google Glass, lots of upcoming gaming news, the FBI’s plan to wiretap web users, iOS 7 is going flat, Facebook and SMS loses millions of users, the world’s first 3D printed gun, and a man who quit the internet for a year (and lived to tell about it)…

‘Ender’s Game’ Trailer: The Unfilmable Sci-Fi Story Finally Gets Big Screen Adaptation

Ender's Game Trailer Header

Nearly 20 years after Orson Scott Card‘s novel was first published, an adaptation of Ender’s Game is finally hitting the big screen. For a long time, Card had believed that the book was “unfilmable” not because of the amount of violence depicted, but because it all took place in Ender’s head. But the film’s first trailer has appeared online, and so far, it looks like it’s not living up to Card’s statements.

Whether or not this trailer will please or anger fans certainly remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, Ender’s Game looks like it will please a new generation of sci-fi fans. Hit the jump to see the new trailer.

Ender's Game Header

The first trailer for Gavin Hood‘s large-scale adaptation of the classic Orson Scott Card sci-fi novel Ender’s Game is set to premiere early this week, but in the meantime, stars Harrison Ford (Colonel Hyrum Graff) and Asa Butterfield (Ender Wiggin) are here to tease some footage from the upcoming trailer.

You can watch the footage with the Ford/Butterfield intro here below.

The full trailer will debut on Tuesday, May 7 at 1:00 PM PT/4:00 PM ET during a Google Plus Hangout in which director Hood, star Butterfield, and producer Roberto Orci will be on hand to discuss the movie. You can tune into the Hangout at YouTube.com/EndersGameMovie and Google.com/+EndersGame and submit questions for the trio to answer during the discussion. I wouldn’t count on Card’s long-held stance on same sex marriage to be addressed though.

Ender's Game Header

If there is one thing you can count on avid fans of novels to do is to immediately jump on any and all mistakes or inaccuracies a director makes for a film adaptation. So just imagine what fans will do if Gavin Hood doesn’t get the look of the Battle Room right in Ender’s Game. Well a new poster gives us a slight tease of what it could look like.

For those that don’t know, the Battle Room is where zero gravity war games are held and cadets are trained to become commanding officers. Asa Butterfield will play the child prodigy Ender who has the skills necessary to be the best commanding officer in the field. He’ll be joined by Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Kingsley, Abigail Breslin, and Viola Davis. Check out the newest poster for Ender’s Game here below.
