Holiday Blu-ray Gift Guide 2017

Ladies and gentlemen, that sainted time of year is once again upon us. Stuffed to the eyeballs with carbohydrate-loaded food, we suck in our guts, put on our finest ensemble of pajama pants and Crocs, and venture out to the nearest mall/shopping center/big box retailer/gas station/roadside flea market to secure gifts for the ones we love. Meanwhile, the ones we tolerate will simply have to suffice with “A Tree Has Been Planted In Your Name” certificates and that fruitcake your grandfather accidentally sat on during Sunday dinner.

As we do every time around this time, Geeks Of Doom has provided for you a comprehensive guide to the finest films and TV series released to DVD and Blu-ray in 2017 (if you’re holding out for laserdisc or Betamax editions of these titles, I both pity and respect you) for you and yours to enjoy for generations to come.

Check out this year’s Holiday Geek Gift Guide: Blu-ray & DVD Edition

Justice League Dark

Despite the mounting issues that Warner Bros.’ DCEU has, there are still many other projects to look forward to. Aside from the typical Wonder Woman, The Flash, Justice League, and standalone Batman film, there is also the long-gestating Justice League Dark. Yes, that project is still very much alive, and after spending some time in the development process the studio has found its director in Doug Liman.

If that sounds a bit strange to you, it is because it is. Liman was the director for Gambit, but given that film’s troubled production history, the Edge of Tomorrow director has moved on over to work on this dark supernatural DCEU film. More on the story below.

DC Resurrects ‘Justice League Dark’ As Next Animated Feature

Justice League Dark

Last summer Warner Bros. temporarily banished their DC Comics superhero film project Justice League Dark to the bleakest depths of Development Hell following the departure of Hellboy and Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro. The project would have brought together the DC Universe’s strangest supernatural heroes including Swamp Thing, the Demon, Zatanna, and John Constantine, but was not intended to be part of the studio’s plans for an extended cinematic universe based on other popular DC characters.

Without del Toro at the helm, the feature looked as good as finished. But although Justice League Dark might never exist as a live-action film, it looks as if we will soon be seeing it in animated form.

Guillermo del Toro Departs ‘Justice League Dark’; ‘Sandman’ Now At New Line Cinema

Guillermo del Toro

The Hollywood Reporter ran an article yesterday about how Warner Bros. is currently in the process of moving some of their less kid-friendly DC Comics movie projects, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s Sandman adaptation, over to their New Line Cinema division.

Buried at the very end was the most distressing news the article contained: Guillermo del Toro is no longer directing Justice League Dark, by far the one future DC film venture I wanted to see made more than anything.

Rumor: Justice League Dark Team Members From ‘Dark Universe’ Film Revealed

Justice League Dark John Constantine

Back in November, Guillermo del Toro submitted his script to Warner Bros. for a Justice League Dark movie, based on the DC Comics series. The movie, with the working title Dark Universe, will center on the more supernatural/occult-oriented characters of the DC universe. So far, we know that Del Toro had plans to make a blond version of John Constantine the lead character and that the Demon in the story will be Jason Blood, who was one of the Knights of King Arthur. The filmmaker had also said that the origins of the team would be uncovered throughout the film, as opposed to all at the beginning, and that “it’s a very different universe.”

There’s been a lot of talk about which characters would appear in the film, but now Latino Review’s El Mayimbe has the scoop on exactly who the members of the Justice League Dark team will be.

WonderCon 2013: Del Toro Reveals Lead Character For ‘Justice League Dark’ Film

Justice League Dark John Constantine

Guillermo Del Toro appeared on a panel today at WonderCon 2013 in Anaheim, CA, to promote his upcoming film Pacific Rim (you can read our full on-site panel coverage here).

During the audience Q&A portion of the panel, a fan asked the director about another project he’s working on: Justice League Dark also known as Dark Universe (and Heaven Sent), a film for DC/Warner Bros.

Del Toro said he was finished with a “bible” for Justice League Dark, which will differ from DC’s main Justice League film, and is beginning on the script with a writer, who will be announced soon. He revealed that the lead character will be a blond version of John Constantine, the center of DC/Vertigo’s comic book series Hellblazer (brought to the screen by Keanu Reeves in 2005’s Constantine). The Demon in the story will be Jason Blood, who was one of the Knights of King Arthur. In the current version of the script, the audience will discover the origins of the team as the story progresses, instead of all at the beginning, and there is going to be a mystery to solve.

Each and every week “Phoenix Barbarian” MK2Fac3 and “Bulldog Barbarian” Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Nothing means nothing. Nothing means nothing, man. No more, I’m talking about all the way to the top, yeah. I’m justifiably in a position that I’d rather not be in, I’m in a position to tell all you readers, yeah, that there are a whole lot of comics coming out this week, yeah, and every comic site has their say. But the cream will rise to THE TOP, oh yeah, GoD Madness has got more to offer in the way of great comics, yeah, than any of those other comic sites think we have. Now, the card’s stacked against every book that we pick this week, yeah, but let me say it, let me say it OUT LOUD that MK2Fac3 and Henchman21 are not happy with your decision to not buy all of these books that we suggest, yeah. WE ARE THE CREAM in weekly comics suggestions and there is no doubt about it, yeah. You, dear reader, you know that The GoD List is the CREAM OF THE CROP!

Each and every week “Heel Heat” MK2Fac3 and “No Show” Henchman21 read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

My Henchman is on sabbatical this week, so I’ve decided to go solo. If H21 were here, though, I’m sure he’d ramble on about a variety of comics, but he’s not. So, get over it! But enough of all that! I wanted to address to important items that are on my radar this week. Firstly, it’s the week after my birthday and none of you got me anything! I’m so incredibly disappointed in each and every one of you. I spend my time giving you something entertaining to read and this is how you repay me!? In the words of the legendary The Iron Sheik, “::expletive deleted::!” Goodness gracious alive, folks! Anyway, on to the next item on the docket, it’s Wrestlemania week! Everyone celebrate! YAY! CM Punk is going to beat Chris Jericho and that’s a fact, Jack! Oh yeah, this feature is about comics…. Here’s this week’s The GoD List!

Creative Team Shake Up On Three DC Comics

DC Change Up (art by Chris Burnham, Ryan Sook and J.G. Jones)

DC Comics announced on Tuesday that a handful of comics in the “dark” line of “The New 52” would have a changing of creative teams. Stormwatch, Justice League Dark, and Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. will all be affected by this shift of comic book writers including Peter Milligan, Jeff Lemire, and Matt Kindt.

First up, let’s take a look at Stormwatch. Stormwatch, in my opinion, has been a sleeper hit that has yet to appeal to a mass audience under the guidance of the incomparable Paul Cornell. And while I’ve loved the series, I can admit that the comic has yet to take off or feel important, so it’s not a surprise to me that veteran Peter Milligan has replaced Cornell to bring a new direction to the series. Cornell announced a couple of months ago that he would be leaving the title, but until now we haven’t learned who his permanent replacement would be. Milligan promises to bring an added intensity to the title that will force the science fiction nature of this book to become even more prevalent and it will certainly breathe new life into the title.
