We are still over a year away from the release of Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to the 1964 musical hit Mary Poppins. Based on PL Travers‘ works, the film follows the title character as she returns to London to help Michael rediscover joy after he suffers a personal heavy loss. Emily Blunt takes on the title role once played by Julie Andrews, and she will be accompanied by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Meryl Streep. It’s not going to be a spoonful of sugar for director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into The Woods) to develop a sequel based on the most acclaimed and respected live-action Disney film of all time: Mary Poppins. After many months of speculation and much anticipation, Disney has officially announced the title and release date for the next chapter of Poppins.

Mary Poppins Returns flies into theaters on December 25, 2018. It’s being reported that Emily Blunt has entered into negotiations to star in Disney’s sequel to Mary Poppins, taking on the title role played by Julie Andrews in the 1964 classic.

Though Blunt is in talks for the role, and is said to have always been the top choice to take on the iconic character, it’s not yet certain she’ll be able to take the job. The actress is currently expecting her second child, and there’s a chance that that could prevent her from being able to commit to the project.
