Venom and Carnage

We found out just last month that Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, and Inception star Tom Hardy was set to star in the R-rated Spider-Man spinoff Venom with Zombieland and Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer behind the camera.

Going with the R-rating—with confidence gained from the successful releases of Deadpool and Logan—is a great start. Now it looks like another step in the right direction has been taken. There was a rumor a few years back (when the movie was going to be co-written and directed by The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman) that the movie could feature none other than Carnage, and it appears that will be the case.

Venom

This year, Sony started to develop spinoffs based on Spider-Man supporting characters. This has been something that Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman and the studio has been cooking up for quite some time. While Sony has the authority to approve these spinoffs, they won’t officially be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – even though Spider-Man has already joined it.

Venom will reportedly be the first of the spinoffs to be released, with a Black Cat and Silver Sable film to follow. And now we know who will play Venom and who will direct the film as well. According to various reports, Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road) will play the title character, while Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) will direct. More on the full story below.

Ghostbusters 3 Header

The list of directors Marvel had hoped would direct Ant-Man after Edgar Wright left the movie is quickly getting shorter. On Friday Adam McKay was in “advanced talks” to direct the film, only to pull out the next day due to prior commitments to other projects. That left Rawson Marshall Thurber (We’re The Millers) and Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) on the list. Fleischer appeared to be the one who could match Wright’s action and comedic sensibilities, but now it appears he too will no longer be in the running.

New reports say that Fleischer could be the top choice to direct Ghostbusters 3. Hit the jump to see why he may no longer be considered to direct Ant-Man.

It’s been a week since Edgar Wright made a joint announcement with Marvel that he not be directing Ant-Man. Whatever controversies and confirmations came after the fallout has the studio on a massive search to fill key positions left vacant by Wright’s departure.

Now that Marvel Studios has to get Ant-Man ready by the July 28 start date, or they could run the risk of pushing the film’s release date back. But Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige intends on releasing the film as scheduled. So in order for that to happen, the Marvel will need to fill in key positions, one of which is obviously the position of director, and now a shortlist of directors has popped up, all of whom actually may be able to bring Wright’s vision to life.

Hit the jump to see who Marvel has on their list.
