The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs

It’s been a hell of a year for horror fans, especially for those who have fond memories of watching Joe Bob Briggs hosting MonsterVision and Joe Bob’s Drive-In Theater in the ’90s. That’s because Shudder brought him back for one last hurrah, a 24-hour horror marathon last summer. But fate had different plans. The marathon was hugely popular, and not only crashed the streaming service but also created its own little monster in the process. Its success led to a pair of holiday specials, “The Dinners of Death” for Thanksgiving and “A Very Joe Bob Christmas.”

Continuing to grow stronger from his resurrection popularity, Joe Bob was eventually given a brand new weekly series called The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. For the past eight weeks, fans have gathered to enjoy a new double feature each Friday night. But with the ninth and final episode set to air tomorrow night, those same fans have been left wondering if there would be any more to look forward to. And thankfully, we finally have an answer to that question as Shudder has given the series a second season.

Jeremy Holm interview

This week on May 9th, Jenn Wexler’s indie punk horror film The Ranger premieres on AMC’s horror streaming service Shudder. The film debuted last summer and ran through the festival circuit. Wexler, who cut her teeth producing at Glass Eye Pix, co-wrote the script with Giaco Furino and the film feels like Wolf Creek by way of Return of the Living Dead. A film called The Ranger is only as strong as its titular villain and that role went to veteran actor Jeremy Holm (House of Cards, Mr. Robot). I got a chance to speak with him as the film prepares to make its streaming debut.

Nightmare Cinema

You’re not going to find many horror fans who will ever get sick of anthologies. They may not all be good, but they’re almost always worth at least one watch on the likely chance that at least one of the segments will be fun.

One upcoming horror anthology is titled Nightmare Cinema. It features five tales directed by Mick Garris, Joe Dante, David Slade, Alejandro Brugués, and Ryûhei Kitamura, and stars Mickey Rourke as the character who is connected to the various stories, known as The Projectionist.

Tigers Are Not Afraid image

Few word pairings have gained the increase in stature in the horror community over the past few years as “Shudder Exclusive.” AMC’s horror streaming service has quickly become the go-to destination for genre fans, acquiring original films and foreign films at a rapid pace. Last year, several Shudder exclusives made my year-end Top Horror films, including Mandy, Revenge, Terrified, Satan’s Slaves, and The Witch in the Window. After recently acquiring the rights to Japanese zom-com One Cut of the Dead, the network just acquired all the rights to Mexican horror film, Tigers Are Not Afraid by writer/director Issa Lopez.

Japanese Zombie Comedy One Cut Of The Dead

AMC’s horror streaming service Shudder has been killing it as of late. They made news last year when their Last Drive-In movie marathon with Joe Bob Briggs broke the internet, and led to Joe Bob’s full return as host of the now-weekly Last Drive-In series every Friday. They also have been bringing in tons of Shudder exclusives and originals, including the Nicolas Cage revenge film Mandy, which debuted on the service last year.

Now, Shudder continues to be a step ahead in the horror streaming game, acquiring the international rights to acclaimed Japanese zom-com One Cut of the Dead, from director Shinichiro Ueda.

Creepshow TV Series Shudder

For anyone who’s not already aware, a TV series based on Stephen King and George A. Romero‘s 1982 horror anthology Creepshow is coming to Shudder. The movie featured a variety of terrifying tales, as well as a great cast including the late great Leslie Nielsen, four-time Academy Award nominee Ed Harris, fellow Oscar nominee Hal Holbrook, Viveca Lindfors, Ted Danson, and even King himself as a memorable lunkhead. It was also followed by a solid sequel in 1987.

Someone else who starred in the original is Adrienne Barbeau (Escape from New York, The Fog, Swamp Thing), appearing in the segment “The Crate.” And as it turns out, her time with Creepshow is not over yet. 37 years after starring in the original, she’s joined the cast of the TV series along with Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Jungle Book, Better Call Saul) and Tobin Bell (Saw, The Firm, Jigsaw).

Shudder Releases Trailer For ‘Critters’ TV Series ‘A New Binge’

Critters: A New Binge

In addition to releasing a trailer for The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs series, Shudder has also released a trailer for Critters: A New Binge. The show is based on the ’80s horror movie franchise, and follows lots of little hairball aliens with intergalactic bounty hunters on their tails wreaking bloody havoc on humanity.

The series, as you’ll see, looks absolutely ridiculous. I mean…there’s a freakin’ Critter taking a smoke break. And of course, the infamous Critterball makes an appearance. But I don’t think fans would have it any other way.

Continue below for more info on Critters: A New Binge and to check out the trailer.

The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs

Shudder bringing back Joe Bob Briggs for a special 24-hour horror marathon last summer turned out to be an excellent decision. The marathon was so popular, it crashed the streaming service.

That led to a pair of holiday specials, “The Dinners of Death” for Thanksgiving followed by “A Very Joe Bob Christmas.” At the same time the holiday specials were announced, it was also revealed that Joe Bob was getting a brand new series sometime in 2019.

Now Shudder has released an official trailer for The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs series, which you can find below along with more details on the show and when you’ll be able to see it.
