Star Trek: Discovery: Desperate Hours
Paperback | Kindle | Audiobook
By David Mack
Publisher: Gallery Books | Simon & Schuster
Release date: September 26, 2017

With the premiere of an all-new Star Trek television series this week comes its first tie-in novel, Star Trek: Discovery: Desperate Hours, which is set one year before the events of the new show. The book introduces us to Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman who was raised on Vulcan, just as she’s elevated to Acting First Officer of the Starship Shenzhou, serving under Captain Philippa Georgiou.

With orders from Starfleet Command, the U.S.S. Shenzhou is en route to help Sirsa III, where a drilling operation has inadvertently awoken an ancient alien leviathan hidden deep within the planet’s seas that has attacked the Federation colony from below. To assist, the U.S.S. Enterprise, commanded by Captain Christopher Pike with Lt. Spock as Second Officer, is also on the way to the planet, where they learn that the regional government has not exactly been on the up and up with the Federation. There’s little time before the ancient vessel destroys the planet and then moves on to conquering other worlds, so the crews of both starships must work together quickly to learn enough about their new enemy to eliminate its deadly threat.

In honor of the 35th anniversary of the theatrical release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Paramount Pictures and Fathom Events are bringing the Director’s Cut version of the film to theaters for two days only this month (9/10 & 9/13). I got the chance to see the film at my local theater at the Sunday afternoon screening, and even though I’ve seen this movie — which is one of my favorites of all time — countless times, getting to see it on the big screen again was elating.

The screenings all include a new interview with the film’s star William Shatner, who played the iconic role of James T. Kirk. In the interview, which begins about 15 minutes prior to the screening times (2pm and 7pm local time), the actor talked about making the sequel and how it reinvigorated the Star Trek franchise.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, undoubtedly the best Star Trek movie ever (and one of my favorite movies of all time)! For the occasion, the film will get a limited theatrical release this September, courtesy of Fathom Events and Paramount Pictures.

The digitally remastered Director’s Cut of the film will get a two-day-only theatrical run nationwide — Sunday, September 10 and Wednesday, September 13, at 2pm and 7pm local time each day. Star Trek: Bridge Crew VR

Ubisoft has released a trailer for their Star Trek virtual reality game, titled Star Trek: Bridge Crew. We saw a reveal trailer for the game at last year’s E3 convention.

The game is more of a simulation, giving you and other players the opportunity to take control of a starship. But you can’t do it alone. Each player has a job to do, and cooperation is required to get it done.

Find more details on Bridge Crew and watch the launch trailer below.

Jason Isaacs in Event Horizon

We already know that the main character of the new Star Trek TV series, titled Star Trek: Discovery, will not be a captain. At least not to start. Instead, the main character will be a lieutenant commander played by The Walking Dead star Sonequa Martin-Green.

But the starship Discovery does still need a captain, and CBS has found the actor to play him. It’s being reported that Jason Isaacs has joined the cast of the show, and will play a character named Captain Lorca.
