The Boys

We’ve been hearing about an adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson‘s The Boys for quite some time now, but nothing ever came of it for many years.

But that’s since changed. The Boys, which is set in a world where superheroes exist and follows a group of vigilantes who are called in to deal with said superheroes when they get out of line, is currently being adapted into a new series for Amazon. And now a director has been hired to help bring the pilot episode of that series to life. It’s being reported that Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, Black Mirror) has signed on to direct the first episode of the planned eight-episode first season.

So, let’s take a look into the depths of their pull list, grab some issues and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of April 6, 2011. ISSUES

secret sixSecret Six #32 (DC Comics – $2.99)Secret Six is easily one of my favorite ongoing series, so don’t be surprised when you see this book on my list every month. Not enough people read this book, and that’s a crime. It’s one of the most consistently awesome comics to come out on a regular basis, and this current storyline is no exception. In this second issue of the current story arc, writer Gail Simone takes the Secret Six into Hell to solve one of the most exciting story lines that was set up at the very beginning of the series. This series continues to be a “can’t miss,” so don’t miss it!

Chew #18 (Image Comics – $2.99)Chew is another one of those books that you don’t want to miss out on. I’ve read this series from the beginning, and although you need to read the entire series, each issue does have a catch-up prologue to explain what the series is about. It’s a really quirky title that’s a blast to read every month with great writing and art. It never disappoints, and with the recent announcement that Showtime will be adapting the series to a television show, you should really get in when you can.

Poe Boys T-shirtBe hungry – nevermore!

Teefury‘s t-shirt of the day is a subject matter I totally love — Edgar Allan Poe!

The design is for a fictional Poe eatery: Poe Boy’s Sandwich Shop, in Baltimore, Maryland (where Poe had sometimes lived and eventually died).

For only $9, plus a small shipping cost, you can get this Poe Boy’s t-shirt, designed by artist odysseyroc, aka Tony Avina, colorist for the comic book The Boys.

The sale at Teefury began at midnight EST (November 13, 2010) and will continue for 24 hours, but once it’s over, it’s gone forever, so grab it now if you want it.

Avina said that he had planned to do a companion design for this called “The Tell Tale Hearth Bakery,” but never did. Now that’s a shirt I’d want to see!

‘The Boys’ Finds A Director In Adam McKay?

Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson‘s The Boys comic put out by Dynamite, which is scheduled for a big screen release in 2011, might have a director. While it was originally reported by Collider that Samuel Bayer wanted to adapt the comic, they are now reporting that they have two sources that say that Adam McKay is in talks with Sony Pictures about directing the film.

Will this be a good move considering McKay’s previous work? Anchorman and the upcoming The Other Guys being a completely different style of film it will definitely make an interesting experiment. The Boys will definitely be a departure for him, but McKay has made it known that he has wanted to get his hands on a comic book movie for quite a while now. It is also immensely intriguing that McKay would choose such a polarizing comic book to start with. The Boys is more of a deconstruction of superheroes than a normal comics story.

‘The Boys’ Gets Writing Team

The Boys Vol. 1The Boys — a currently still in-production comic by Garth Ennis that was recently pick up for a movie treatment — has found its writing duo in Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, who have written Crazy/Beautiful, The Tuxedo, and Aeon Flux.

The Boys follows a group of C.I.A. agents (called The Boys) who exists in your typical comic book world with superheroes running around. Their job is to sort of moderate these superheroes, deal with them when needed, and sometimes even kill them off. Ennis himself has even said that this series would out-do his very own Preacher in terms of violence and other things. Not an easy feat.

Speaking of Preacher, we all know how much trouble that’s having in being made into a movie/TV show, so I wouldn’t even go and get my hopes up for this one yet. And not to sound negative, but I’m not sure that if I was a fan of this series, I’d be thrilled about the dude’s that wrote Aeon Flux and The Tuxedo writing this. My gut says it may just end up looking more like Four Brothers — with superheroes.
