Casey Affleck in The Finest Hours

The Finest Hours is the true story of how four members of the coast guard braved a massive storm to rescue 30 sailors stranded on the SS Pendleton, which had been split into two. But what you may not realize that the film is also a story of survival. Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) the ship’s engineer, took it upon himself to be the leader of the 30 man crew, most of whom were frightened at the thought of staying aboard a half-broken ship and wanted to take their chances on a fragile lifeboat. But with a calm demeanor, Sybert rallied the men to work together to survive one of the worst storms recorded in U.S. history.

We had a chance to talk to Affleck during the film’s press junket where he spoke to a group of journalists about what it was like to play a real-life hero, the filming process, the research, the sets, and more. Check out our interview with the actor below.

Chris Pine and Ben Foster star in Walt Disney Studios’ The Finest Hours, a film that tells the true story of a 1952 rescue mission of four members of the Coast Guard who brave hurricane-like storms to save the survivors of the SS Fort Mercer, who are aboard on only half of a ship.

We were recently invited to sit down with our fellow journalists to talk to Pine and Foster who play Boatswains Mate First Class Bernard Webber and Seaman Richard Livesey. In our interview we talk about what it was like to play real-life heroes, the difficulties of capturing an authentic New England accent, the research process, and contending with all that water. Check out our roundtable interview with the two below.

Disney In Depth Banner

Following a strong 2015 slate, The Walt Disney Studios continues its eclectic lineup of original productions, branding via Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Disney, and a few remakes. 2016 should once again demonstrate Disney’s prominence in the film business, though Universal is experiencing a creative and critical resurgence to some degree. What Disney holds in its favor is consistency (in quality, generally) and accessibility (familiarity with properties). Consumers know (almost) precisely what they receive in buying a ticket to a Disney movie – even if Disney now has its hands in Lucasfilm and Marvel films.

Here is a preview of 2016 films from The Walt Disney Studios.

Chris Pine is fine as a leading man. We have seen him captain a team in Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and the upcoming Star Trek Beyond. But his next film sees him something that is based on a story, and has him captaining a ship of a different kind. In The Finest Hours, the actor plays Bernie Webber, a man who rallies a team together to head straight into one of New England’s deadliest storms to save 30 stranded men aboard a sinking ship.

Check out the second trailer for the film below.

Disney In Depth: The Walt Disney Studios 2015 Preview (Part 2)

Disney In Depth banner

The Walt Disney Studios’ most exciting slate of films in recent memory arrives in 2015. Despite a few films shifting release dates from when I first considered this to be Disney’s most major year ever back in May 2013, the line-up of movies can excite anyone. Whether you adore Disney’s standard fare (sports, sci-fi, fantasy, and animation) or even anything under the Pixar, Lucasfilm, or Marvel banners, Disney will surely dominate the box office and perhaps even critical hits, too.

This second part (be sure to check out Part 1 right here if you missed it) will focus on each of the theatrical films to debut from The Walt Disney Studios during the latter part of this year.

Disney Announces Release Dates For ‘Ghost In A Shell’, ‘Pete’s Dragon’; Moves ‘Jungle Book’

Disney The Jungle Book live-action concept art

Disney has just announced the release dates for Dreamworks’ Ghost In A Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson in the lead role, as well as their remake of Pete’s Dragon. They have also shifted the schedules for Jon Favreau‘s Jungle Book and Craig Gillespe‘s coast guard film The Finest Hours starring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck.

Rupert Sanders (Snow White And The Huntsman) will direct a live-adaptation of the hit anime Ghost In A Shell, with the film slated for an April 4, 2017 release. While the Avengers actress’ schedule is busy, it shows that Disney wants to get the film out sooner than later. Also, with the recent cast announcements for the Pete’s Dragon remake, with Dexter‘s Michael C. Hall and Wes Bentley (American Horror Story: Freak Show) signing on, it only makes sense that the studio reveal the release date for the film, which will be August 12, 2016.

‘RED’ Director Robert Schwentke In Talks To Helm Disney’s ‘The Finest Hours’

Robert Schwentke Header

Both RED and the soon to be released R.I.P.D. are rich in action and comedy, but for Robert Schwentke‘s next directorial effort, there could a huge change of pace. Rather than direct another adaptation of a comic book, the director has entered talks to helm a film based on a true story for the Disney company. The Finest Hours centers on a story of U.S. Coast Guard’s heroic efforts to rescue two oil tankers during a blizzard in 1952.

THR reports that James Tamasy and Eric Johnson (The Fighter) penned the script for The Finest Hours from the 2009 book of the same name, which was written by Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias. In 1952, 84 sea men struggled to survive when their ship was struck by the most brutal nor’easter in years. As a result, the Atlantic froze over and produced some of the worst winter winds and The U.S. Coast Guard was sent in for a rescue.
