Star Wars The Last Jedi - Empire

The Last Jedi and Empire Strikes Back have things in common.

SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Last Jedi

When last I wrote about Star Wars, it was late 2015. I’d seen a screening of The Force Awakens, and I left the film feeling pumped. It’d been ten years since any of us had seen a Star Wars film on screen, and while 2005’s Revenge of the Sith was probably the very best of the prequel trilogy, I’d left that film somewhat disappointed – it just wasn’t the unqualified space opera tragedy I was looking for.

The Force Awakens, however, ticked off all of the boxes in the theater:

– Fast-paced
– Fresh, new characters
– Surprisingly heart-warming performances
– Suspense
– Fantastic effects
– Action Action Action

Star Wars The Last Jedi starring Kelly Marie Tran and John Boyega

Star Wars films have made more than an impact in film and pop culture, they have also paved the way for major revolutions. These films have opened the doors for young girls to accept their roles as heroes, or in this case Jedi. They don’t have to play the role of the damsel in distress, now they can be fearless warriors fighting the good fight. And we will see more of that now that there are a lot more powerful female characters in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Whether it is Rey (Daisy Ridley) training to become a Jedi, General Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern) overseeing military strategies for the Resistance, or Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) infiltrating the First Order, young girls have a lot more characters to look up to.

Geeks of Doom was invited to sit down with their fellow journalists to talk about the incredible changes that have been happening in the past few years and how having more female characters have given their young female fans someone to cheer for and quite possibly be inspired by. Check out what they had to say below.

Star Wars The Last Jedi Finn vs Captain Phasma

Star Wars is entering a new age within its own legacy. These new films have become much more diverse in characters and in tone since being acquired by Disney. With Star Wars: The Last Jedi just a few weeks away from release, director Rian Johnson was tasked with continuing J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens story. While it may sound like he was confined to a certain narrative, Johnson never forgot that this ultimately was a Star Wars movie.

Geeks of Doom had a chance to sit down with their fellow journalists to talk to the director and cast about the upcoming film, how it may differ from The Force Awakens and other sequels in general, and how making it has impacted their lives. Check out that they had to say below, along with some images from the press junket.

The last two Star Wars films have set the December weekend opening box office number bar high. Both The Force Awakens and Rogue One had record-breaking numbers and exceeded all expectations.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Vulptex

Those cute and cuddly porgs may be the thing that everyone is excited about, but they aren’t the only creatures we will be seeing in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. There are also those mysterious crystal foxes, which have gone virtually unnamed since we first saw them in the second trailer.

But in EW’s week-long coverage of the highly anticipated Star Wars film, we are learning more about these foxes. They actually serve a purpose other than to look cool or hope that they are real and can be domesticated. Check out what their name is and how they will be the light to guide our heroes below.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi header

Earlier this week, we got to see a handful of new photos for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and we learned quite a few things about it. Among those things is that there will be some infighting within the Resistance. The events of The Force Awakens have left the faction broken and scattered across the cosmos, and it will be up to General Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern) to put the pieces back together.

However, those same images are teasing the idea that Leia could pass down her power of leadership to Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), the Resistance’s ace pilot, and it appears that he and Holdo have very different ways of bringing an end to the war between themselves and the First Order. Find out more about Holdo’s role in the film in the full story below.
