Kevin Bacon in Tremors TV Series

Back in June of last year we found out that SYFY had ordered a pilot episode for a Tremors TV series, and that one of the stars of the original movie, Kevin Bacon, was going to star. News that excited the many fans of the creature feature franchise, which has since spawned five sequels (or four sequels and one prequel) and an earlier TV series in 2003.

The 2003 series was also on SYFY (which was called Sci-Fi Channel at the time) and starred Michael Gross, who has also appeared in all six movies, but it was canceled after only 13 episodes. Now it appears the first attempt has made SYFY a little nervous, as the network has decided to pass on the new Tremors series after only a pilot.

Bacon himself shared the news, and those who were working on the project are surprised by the decision. You can see what they’ve had to say about it below, which also includes some images from the pilot.

Syfy has ordered a pilot episode for a potential TV series based on the monster movie franchise Tremors. The series, as we learned when its development was first announced a couple of years back, comes from Universal Cable Productions and Blumhouse Television.

The news was confirmed by Kevin Bacon, who’s set to executive produce and star in the series, reprising his role as Valentine McKee. Bacon played the role in the 1990 original movie, but did not return for any of the four sequels that have been produced since then.

Kevin Bacon to star in Tremors TV show

Twenty-five years ago, long after the Cold War gave us an entire generation of giant monster movies; a crew met out in the middle of the desert (or the town of Perfection, Nevada) to make Tremors. On a budget of about $11 million, director Ron Underwood helped created one of the coolest and most original monster movies in years. A young, fresh out of the awesome 80’s Kevin Bacon played Valentine “Val” McKee, and Fred Ward was his slightly older, slightly wiser partner Earl. Together, they find themselves in the middle of a mess, when giant underground creatures dubbed”Grabboids” with tentacled tongues that pull their victims in swarm the town. With the help of a rag tag crew, including a young pretty seismologist Rhonda (Finn Carter), and married gun nuts Burt and Heather (Michael Gross & Reba McEntire), they defend the town from these creatures, while spouting hilarious one-liners from a script from the duo of S.S. Wilson & Brent Maddox. The movie holds a special place in my heart as well as the hearts of young 80s kids yearning for some fun scares. The special effects hold up and the Grabboids were awesome practical monsters, some of the last before Spielberg changed the game with Jurassic Park in 1993, and CG became the way of the future.

Why are we discussing a quarter century year old classic? Because Tremors, complete with Val himself, is returning to the screen… the small screen.

More on this below.

Hello There! This is Adam Frazier and you are listening to Skull-Face Island, the official movie podcast of Geeks of Doom! As always I’m joined by the Sandworm to my Beetlejuice, David Allen… and the Island’s 2013 Men’s Doubles Tennis Co-Champion, producer Tim Grant.

Today on the Show: We’ll discuss the latest news regarding Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Anchorman: The Legend Continues, and the 2013 South by Southwest Film Festival. As you know, we typically review a new release thanks to the amazing treehouse technology at our disposal – but due to unforeseen circumstances (tropical storm), our satellite dish has been knocked out so we had to dig into the archives for a Retro-Review. This week’s movie: Ron Underwood‘s immortal classic, TREMORS.
