Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2016

Now that 2016 is behind us, it’s time for me to reveal my favorite Movies of 2016. On a global level, the year 2016 will go down in history as a difficult one, where we lost a lot of talented people and there seemed to be an overall negativity in the air (thanks in part to the general election here in the U.S). On a personal level, 2016 was not only difficult, but sorrowful, as I lost my father to cancer. My dad loved movies, and every time we got together, we would discuss the films we had recently seen. Dad got sick early in the year, so we didn’t get to have our usual movie pow-wows.

My top movies are always of the blockbuster, superhero, scifi/fantasy variety, with some comedies sprinkled in, because I like to rewatch movies, so I tend to pick more uplifting titles as “favorites” — therefore, I’m not saying my list is of the “best” movies, they are just the ones I enjoyed the most and will likely rewatch to my heart’s content.

Disney In Depth Banner

The Walt Disney Studios released three critically/viewer acclaimed films in 2016 that also were major financial hits – Moana still pending, but early signs look favorable; Finding Dory; and Zootopia.

Which of the three films, though, is the best? That’s like picking a favorite child, considering each movie’s unique strengths. To help determine the winner – in my book, at least – I have established a bunch of categories that apply to all of the films. Let the battle commence!

Honest Trailers Zootopia

It’s hard to believe that Disney actually made money this year from sources outside Marvel comics, but let’s not forget Zootopia, the latest Pix-sny… Dis-nar… PIXAR film that grossed over a billion dollars worldwide. Zootopia was great and my 5-year old daughter loved it; which means I have a reprieve from Frozen!!! Even if they purposely have Idris Elba’s Chief Bogo tell Judy to “Let it go” in a not-so-subtle wink at parents. With the movie being released on Blu-ray and DVD this week, the gang at Screen Junkies gave it the Honest Trailer treatment.

Check out the Honest Trailer below.

Zootopia directors Rich Moore and Byron Howard

Disney’s Zootopia is the number one animated film of the year, grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide, a number suited for the king of the beasts. Now with the film finally arriving on Blu-ray, you can take that same joyful experience you had watching the film on the big screen to your house, where you can watch it over and over and over again. To help promote the film’s home entertainment release, we sat down with the directors of Zootopia, Bryon Howard (Bolt, Tangled) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph 2, The Simpsons and Futurama) to talk about what their biggest takeaway was since the release of the film, how their research trips from other zoos and Kenya helped shaped the film to what it is now, and the progress on Wreck-It Ralph 2 and the new Tangled animated series.

Check it all out below.

Zootopia Header

If you were a fan of Disney’s recent animated release Zootopia—and a whole lot of people were; the movie has made over $800 millions worldwide in the one month since its release—a new video will be of interest to you.

The video is a huge making of documentary titled “Imagining Zootopia,” and it runs over 45 minutes long and covers the entire process of developing and making the movie.

Obviously it’s very likely that this will be a bonus feature on the Blu-ray release of the movie, so you might prefer waiting for that to watch this. But if you can’t wait that long be sure to continue below to give it a watch.

Movie Review: Zootopia

Zootopia Header

Zootopia
Directors: Byron Howard, Rich Moore, Jared Bush
Writers: Jared Bush, Phil Johnston
Cast: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, J.K. Simmons, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Shakira
Studio: Disney Animation Studios
Release Date: March 4, 2016

On the surface, Zootopia looks like just another talking animal with anthropomorphic features piddling around getting laughs by means of using childish humor. But that is just the surface, and it is a very thin one. In reality, for beyond that layer lies a deeper and more meaningful story, and if you peel that layer back, you’ll soon discover that Disney Animation Studios’ latest film has a message, a very poignant one that could not have come out at a more perfect time.

In a day and age where bullying, prejudices, stereotypes, and preconceived notions are hurting many, and social issues are becoming more prevalent in our neighboring communities and homes, Zootopia has a message. Yeah, expecting a film like this to get everyone to get along is merely impossible and expecting too much, but all it is asking of us is to “try.” Try to understand one another, because if you do, you’ll become more exceptional. Check out the full review of the movie here below.

50 Things You Need To Know About Disney’s ‘Zootopia’

Zootopia Header

Zootopia marks the return of Disney using animals who can walk and talk. While this isn’t be the first time we have seen such a film where no humans are involved, the film has a more contemporary feel to it, with the world of Zootopia drawing inspiration from real-world based architecture, vehicles, and government agencies like a police force and the DMV. The film comes from Bryon Howard (Tangled, Bolt) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph).

You have already seen what it takes to make a movie that has never been seen be-fur, what it takes to design an animal metropolis that has been designed by animals, figuring out the story, and the animation process. Now its time for some fun facts. Little fun tid bits that we learned with our fellow journalists during this fun event. Below are 50 things you need to know about Zootopia which includes how the directors and producers are continuing Disney’s legacy, the amount of research that went into the film, the new animation technology that was used in the film, the recording process, how many leaves are on a tree, and so much more. Check it all out below.

Zootopia Animal Scale

In the past few months we’ve shared a behind-the-scenes look of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ latest film Zootopia. We, along with a group of our fellow journalists, visited the studios’ temporary Tujunga Campus where the animators and storytellers were hard at work getting ready for the film’s March 2016 release. Now we are revealing a little bit more by giving you a look at the animation side of the film.

Below we had a chance to sit down and listen to Character Design Supervisor Cory Loftis, Character Look Supervisor Michelle Robinson, Character CG Supervisor Dave Komorowski, and Simulation Supervisor Claudia Chung Sanii explain what it takes to fill up the empty city of Zootopia. There are nearly 400 animals from each continent were represented in the film.
