Before the Vikings 3.9 “Breaking Point” review, let’s recap last week. Some spoilers! Watch the episode before you read past the recap.

Last week’s “To The Gates” episode was action-packed pretty much throughout, with most of it taken up with the big attack and battle. I swear I almost had a heart attack and texted my editor that they killed another character off, when I saw Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) with that blank corpse stare. And then I had to text “My bad!” when he wasn’t. THEN, I thought Rollo (Clive Standen) died and I was set to quit the show. And THEN I thought Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) died by fire, and I was ok with that, but I was wrong about that, too. I couldn’t even really write about it last week, because that would be giving everything away. I needed a drink after that episode.

Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and Kalf (Ben Robson) attacked on another front, and Lagertha would have been dead, had Kalf not picked her up and carried her away. I really want to hate him. So does she. But we both can’t.

Princess Gisla (Morgane Polanski) is a true leader, placing herself in the battle, inspiring her men. Emperor Charles (Lothaire Bluteau) should take a page out of her book.

Vikings 3.9 “Breaking Point” review: Jesus Odin! This was a superb episode! There is no holding back! They attacked Paris once again – sneaking shieldmaidens, swimming in darkness, stealing life in whispers until they could let the others in. I felt like picking up an ax and joining those warrior goddesses. They let the rest of the poised men in through fire. Watch this battle and try to tell me that the weapon that is set upon the Vikings is not a uniquely disgusting way to kill. Rollo shines through this battle, not just to his people, Count Odo (Owen Roe) remarks upon his prowess as well. He was magnificent, but I’m wondering if he stood out just a little bit more because of his aversion to shirts.

Back in Wessex, King Ecbert (Linus Roache) is really gross, making Judith (Jennie Jacques) his mistress, then praising his son Aethulwulf (Moe Dunford) up an down when he returns from Mercia. Disgusting!

Best of all… Athelstan! Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) is really ill from his wounds. Hallucinating, he sees a vision of a lovely Athelstan walking towards him, welcoming and loving. I’m not sure if George Blagden plain old lied to me about not knowing what was going to happen, or if they filmed those scenes prior to “Born Again.”

George – feel free to call me to straighten this out.

The last scene is a surprise to every character, but maybe not so much to us. More on that next week.

The Vikings season finale airs next Thursday at 10pm ET on The History Channel.
