Samuel L. Jackson Talks Nick Fury Not Being In ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ ‘Black Panther’

MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS #3

Nick Fury has been a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the very beginning. While Samuel L. Jackson‘s roles have been supporting ones, there is no doubt he plays a key part in the MCU. But he has been noticeably absent during the events of Phase 3.

Who knows what he would have done during Captain America: Civil War. And now it appears he won’t have a role in other films like Avengers: Infinity War, the untitled Avengers 4, and Black Panther. See what Jackson had to say below.

Speaking to Yahoo! Movies while on The Hitman’s Bodyguard press tour, Jackson talked a little bit about his role (or lack thereof) in future MCU films. Here’s what the actor had to say:

“I wasn’t in the “˜superhero argument’ movie [Captain America: Civil War], I’m not in Avengers 3 and 4. They’re shooting them now, and they haven’t called me yet. They wouldn’t let me go to Black Panther-ville, so it’s kinda like how you gonna make a black Marvel movie and not let Nick Fury show up in it?!”

With Infinity War just finishing production, there is still a very small chance that he could be asked to do some sort of credits scene. But that is just speculation on my part. However, Avengers 4 has just started shooting, so he could have a role in that film. Let’s remember that Marvel has given out small parts of the script in order to avoid spoilers from leaking out.

So while it is disappointing that Nick Fury won’t be in Black Panther featuring a large number of black actors, I really cannot see how he would fit into the film’s narrative without taking away from T’Challa’s story. After all, the film is about T’Challa and sees the title character return home after the events of Captain America: Civil War, only to find that there is political strife within the nation of Wakanda.

There is a bright side to all of this though. Jackson will be in Captain Marvel as a much younger version of himself before he put on the eye patch. And that will be released right after Avengers: Infinity War, so maybe, somehow, that film will bridge the gap to Avengers 4. Of course, fans know that Skrulls have the ability to morph, so there is a possibility that a Skrull could have been masquerading around as Fury this whole time. Again, I have to stress, that is just speculation.

Not having Nick Fury in an Avengers film would be terrible for the franchise. He was the one who made it all happen, or at least planted the seeds to make it all happen. We’ll just have to wait and see how this all plays out.

Black Panther arrives on February 16, 2018, while Avengers: Infinity War follows on May 4, 2018. Then Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019, then Avengers 4 opens on May 9, 2019.
