The much-anticipated Boba Fett film that was supposed to come from director James Mangold appears to be as dead as the character.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says their focus has changed and now they will be turning their attention to other Star Wars related projects. Check out the full report below.
Kennedy attended a special critics screening of Black Panther this past weekend. A member of the Critics Choice Association asked her about the status of the standalone film. Here’s what he posted on his Twitter account:
The journalist said that he had asked the question after hosting an after party screening for Black Panther and its director Ryan Coogler. So it’s not as if it was asked during an interview or press conference. That being said, it would make sense that the project is dead considering that Disney and Lucasfilm are now focused on The Mandalorian:
The Mandalorian will be a 10-episode series that will be streamed exclusively on Disney Play. The show is currently under production with Jon Favreau acting as executive producer.
While it had been reported that the spinoffs were on hold, Lucasfilm later said they are not on hold. Disney CEO Bob Iger has gone on record saying that they would be slowing down the production of Star Wars films.
The Boba Fett film had been under development for some time now but was not actually confirmed. Reports of it were rumored just as soon as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was announced in 2015. However, the film had hit numerous delays, which included the firing of Josh Trank. It would be three years before Mangold was reported to have boarded the project as the film’s director. There was even a point where Michael B. Jordan was attached to play the fan-favorite bounty hunter. However, plans for that fell through.
So here we are. After Solo: A Star Wars Story failed to meet certain expectations, Disney and Lucasfilm reevaluated their Star Wars output. In addition to the Rian Johnson trilogy and a series of films from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, it seems that adding spinoffs would be too much. Although, that doesn’t seem to be much of a problem for Marvel Studios. The plan was to release a Saga film and spinoff during alternate years. Again, plans change.
And as plans change, there is a chance that a Boba Fett film could be revived. But don’t hold your breath on it happening anytime soon.
