Dark Universe title card

This weekend, Universal will launch the start of their brand new Dark Universe monsters franchise with a reboot of The Mummy. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, the film will bring together some of our favorite classic monsters in an all new shared universe involving Universal Monsters. It will be followed up by the Bill Condon-directed Bride of Frankenstein, starring Javier Bardem; Creature of the Black Lagoon from screenwriters Jeff Pinkner and Will Beall; The Invisible Man, starring Johnny Depp; and Van Helsing, from Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts, Arrival writer Eric Heisserer, and Dan Mazeau.

But that is just the beginning. Because Kurtzman says there are more Dark Universe films on the way. In a new interview, the man responsible for building this new Universal Monsters shared universe says Dracula, Frankenstein, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Phantom of the Opera are being developed. More on the story below.

Universal Monsters

Given the popularity of superhero shared universes, studios are trying to snatch up properties in hopes of mimicking their box office success. So it is easy to see why some would dismiss one of the newest shared universes, Universal’s Classic Monsters universe.

Sure, Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy may be the beginning of a Universal Monsters shared universe with Dr. Jekyll (Russell Crowe) being the rumored thread that ties it all together, but producer Chris Morgan says upcoming remakes of The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, Van Helsing, Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc, won’t be anything like what’s being done over at Marvel Studios or WB’s DC Films. Check out what he had to say below.

Universal Classic Monsters

Universal Pictures wants in on the unified franchises game being perfected by the well-oiled machine that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe and attempted by Warner Brothers’ DC Comics lineup.

But instead of acquiring a new superhero/comic book property, Universal is reaching back to some classics. It’s being reported that the studio has decided to reboot their Universal Classic Monsters, the legendary line-up of monster movies including Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, and The Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Horror Icons Illustrated Ironically Using Cosmetics and Beauty Supplies

Matt Andrews Horror Icons Created With Cosmetics

Artist Matt Andrews cleverly and beautifully illustrated some of horror’s biggest icons using only cosmetics and beauty supplies. And if that task wasn’t intricate enough, the beauty product he used for each horror baddie was chosen for its ironic twist; for example; Nosferatu and Dracula were created with bronzer, The Wolfman with shaving cream, and The Creature From The Black Lagoon in baby powder. Each illustration has a little story to go with it explaining why those products were chosen.

The artwork is part of Andrews’ book, Cosmonstrography: Cosmetic Monster Photography, which is available via Blurb for $16.

Andrews posted 13 images online, which also includes killers like Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers. Check out all 13 images here below.
