Star Wars: The Force Awakens 06

It’s time for my annual look back at my top 10 favorite movies of 2015. While I do write the occasional movie review, I don’t consider myself to be a “film critic,” but rather more of an enthusiastic movie watcher. I enjoy a lot of movies I watch, but not many becomes “favorites.” So, this list here is not my picks for the “best” films of the year; these are merely my favorite movies of 2015.

I do get to see a lot of films every year, and my criteria for a “favorite” typically is one that keeps me entertained and makes me want to see it repeatedly. Admittedly, I tend to be drawn more towards the fantasy/superhero selections, and less towards the Oscar bait pictures. There will be plenty of other “Best Of 2015” lists being published here at Geeks Of Doom in the coming days that will take a more analytical look at 2015’s films, and will likely include more serious dramas. But for now, with me, you’ll get more fun picks than anything else.

With that, here’s a list of my Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2015.

“Ghosts are real, that much I know. I’ve seen them all my life…”

Directed by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth), Crimson Peak is a gothic romance that hearkens back to golden age Hollywood productions like Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s Dragonwyck, and Hitchcock’s Rebecca.

Set in the year 1901, Crimson Peak follows Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska, Stoker), an aspiring author living with her father, Carter Cushing (Jim Beaver), in Buffalo, New York. Armed with a fascination for the supernatural and a passion for literature, Edith hopes to follow in the footsteps of forward-thinking Victorian women like Mary Shelley.

Her latest work of fiction – a ghost story – is based in reality, as Edith is plagued by visions of her deceased mother. A skull-faced phantom veiled in black, Edith’s mother has appeared throughout her daughter’s life to deliver a cryptic warning, “Beware of Crimson Peak.”

Guillermo del Toro at the Crimson Peak Gothic Gallery

If you told me Guillermo del Toro was making a live-action My Little Pony movie (don’t go getting any ideas, Hollywood), I’d be excited about it. Anything he does, I’m down for a watch. But while this is true, if you really want to get me pumped up tell me that del Toro is working on a smaller film next. I’ve very much enjoyed his bigger Hollywood flicks like the Hellboy movies, Pacific Rim, and Blade II, but it’s his smaller movies like The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth that really get me giddy.

In a lengthy piece on the director it’s revealed that his next project, after the upcoming gothic horror Crimson Peak, will in fact be one of these smaller movies. In addition to this, del Toro also talked ghostly encounters that have led to his fascination with the paranormal, the status of Pacific Rim 2, and more. Read what he had to say below.

Tom Hiddleston in Crimson Peak

Guillermo del Toro returns to the horror genre with Crimson Peak, a period piece that combines romance and fright with beautiful costumes and gorgeous set pieces. A three-story Victorian house was actually built for the film, and it’s equipped with elevators, bathrooms, and a full library. Earlier this year, the teaser trailer gave us our very first early look at the film.

Now, Legendary Pictures and Universal have released a new trailer for the film, providing new footage, a much better look at the house no one will be able to stop talking about, and plot details.
